Who Can Drive?

Hello, I’m planning a first-time trip to the US and Canada. Being European and not really enjoying long flightswe would like to see as much as possible on the continent, so we plan to spend about weeks travelling. We would like to combine cities with scenic drives and some nature attractions but that to a limited extent along the way.

My question is, is the trip manageable roax this itinerary? It adds up to about 2, miles. We are experienced road trippers, ths Prague we have done circuits as long as kilometers in two weeks, once around the Baltic states, once around Scandinavia, Italy and many. I would think that we mae be perfectly okay, but it is true that I don’t know the American realities, so I will be glad for any input. Also, if it would make a lot of sense, we could leave Canada out, stay in the US and travel more to the south, incorporating for example Blue Ridge Parkway into our itinerary.

I have Detroit in brackets, likely we would just drive. Also train tickets would cost something, so even when taking into account parking fees, gas etc I think we should be better off with the carnot talking about much more comfortable it is with suitcases Do know, assuming no mitigating circumstances, as a European passport holder, that you will need an ESTA to fly to the USA and an eTA to fly to Canada, both crossing borders by land need different requirements.

You don’t mention budget. You can play with airfares to maximise your trip plan once you have a better idea. So you could fly into USA and back home from Canada, or grip versa. These days a regular return ticket is not necessarily the only option for cheaper flights. For more flight help, there is the Air Travel forum.

As noted, travel between Moeny, NYC and Washington, DC can often be more convenient if done by Amtrak rail services, and that might influence start or end point. It certainly avoids a lot of less than exciting driving. One way car rental fees is a consideration, but you need to look at the whole picture of the trip. Back tracking or facing horrible traffic should be considered and weighed up. My main concern is that you wish to do a road trip. That’s not impossible, but your wish list so far is a long list of very large cities, none of which are fun to drive in.

If that’s the extent of your trip, then a road trip — however happy you are driving — just may not be the best approach. You may need to use tolls roads, you will need to pay for parking in big cities, and rad might not be where you wish to be that you are able to park, and then there’s the lost opportunity cost of paying for a rental car for so many days when it’s not used.

Separately, given you like cities, how much time do you envisage spending in each one? That is perhaps a better guide to whether the trip is possible time wise, rather than the driving between mooney and your choice of cities. That needs about 3 weeks of time, given the list. Then you need to add travel time and in general an allowance of a day between each stop irrespective of actual distance for simplicity at this point.

Then you need to trim your list if you wish to keep the trip below 4 weeks for sure. When planning your budget check out cost of hotels, rooms can be very expensive particularly in the big cities and will often charge you extra for parking. On my last trip it was cheaper by several hundred dollars to rent and return the anc from Washington DC rather than New York City.

The train service between the two cities is good and so I’m told the drive is not particularly pleasant. Niagara Falls is best seen from the Canadian Side and although it is possible sround drive a rental car between Canada and USA you need to check out the extra paperwork needed in addition to your Mqke and the Canadian equivalent.

If cities are your thing, that’s fine, but there is a lot to see in between for example check out Finger Lakes road trip around the us and make money New York State.

Thank you very much for your input. I get the point that when focusing on cities, road trip isn’t the best idea, but we’re used to this style of travelling.

I especially like the possibility to stop in smaller towns or generally anywhere along the way, because one gets to know the country much better than when sticking to planes and trains. It is really hard to say how long we’ll want to stay in each of the cities. We don’t like museums apart from few exceptions and generally are fine just walking through a historic center or rather CBD?

Nevertheless, New York will need four nights, that’s for sure, Chicago and Boston. Probably also Washington and Philadelphia. For Pittsburgh and Cleveland three nights together should. That’s let’s say 20 nights. But it is true that everything takes more time than one expects My initial plan was to fly to New York, leave from Chicago.

However, I don’t know how to incorporate Boston, flying here and renting a car already there doesn’t make sense, because in New York it would just stand in a garage for four days, costing us a lot.

Regarding thhe budget, we don’t want to spend tens of thousands of dollars, but we are prepared for relatively high costs and the main aim is to prepare an interesting and enjoyable itinerary. But of course, we don’t want to do things like renting a car and than keeping it in garage in New York for many days as I’ve mentioned. Since you only have 3 or 4 weeks it’s not much time for all the places you want to go plus some scenery.

My suggestion is as follows. From Boston rent a car so that you can enjoy your scenery by going though New Hampshire’s White Mountains and then Vermont.

If you can rent a car from Boston and dropping it off in Buffalo then take the train back to NY. May I ask—why Pittsburgh? I know that area, and if I was coming on my first trip to the US with limited time, for the average tourist there are better places to spend your time, IMO. Cars add a bunch of added costs with parking fees. You could fly to Chicago. TxOffWeGo I love the setting of Pittsburgh, being on the confluence of two rivers and I have wanted to see the views from the south bank for long time.

Also, the famous Czech hockey player Jaromir Jagr played in Pittsburgh for many years and the city became relatively well-known for this in the Czech Republic : We don’t need to spend much time there, but there is no way we would omit it from our itinerary.

Another option would be dropping the car in Chicago for the time we stay there and doing two one way rentals, would depend on the prices The problem with train travel is that for three people tickets for example from Boston to New York cost the same as one way car rental between that cities for two days.

And with the car one has the freedom to stop anywhere one wants. Flights Vacation Rentals Restaurants Things to. Profile JOIN. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers.
