The Charge Blade is also great, but unless you’re using a guard point to block with, it’s not actually good with defense since it demolishes your sharpness.
It’s a really fun weapon, but aside from «randomly» timed attacks where your shield is moving in some way but not actually being held to block where monster hits makung glance or bounce off of it, you may as well not even have a shield at all. It has some crazy burst potential, but at the same time, high potential for wasted vials until you really get used to aiming the super, since it’s very awkward when using it for the first time.
The Bow is also pretty strong, but it’s not as forgiving as the weapons listed above, especially the Lance. Lance users also run through maps the fastest, so unless you’re a really good Great Sword or Hammer user, it will probably get the fastest mission clears overall.

Being close really doesn’t matter because makig range coating is unlimited, and if you do get a chance to hit at range, you actually can do so unlike melee weapons. So basically I just play bow like a melee except I have the option of range too when the opportunity presents. Dragon piercer seems to have a very, very generous critical range.
