Being a chef is hard work. You have to work nights, holidays and weekends. Its not like what you see on TV. Plus, you have to work your way up. When you graduate from culinary school, you will not be hired as a chef. You have to start out at an entry level position like prep cook, line cook or dishwasher. It takes, at the very minimum, about 5 years of line cooking experience before you can start looking for a job as a chef. Line cooks don’t make much over minimum wage. I would suggest and if you do exxecutives of coops make good money really serious about this you find a job working at a restaurant before you decide to go to culinary school.
A lot of people in this industry hate their jobs. It would be a good idea to find out if you like this type of work before wasting your money on a culinary degree. Entry level positions are easy to. Get a job as a greeter, busperson or dishwasher. If you like it, then go to culinary school. I would also highly recommend working in the industry while in school.
Work your way up to «line cook». I also wouldn’t stop at a culinary degree which is a two year associates degree. Get a bachelors degree in business or hospitality management. An MBA would also be good idea. People with masters degrees are golden in this industry.
